The base is a simple shortbread style dough, which is nice and light. It works with either fresh or dried buds.
I also added a bit of natural oils to enhance the flavor, without being overpowering. Then I dusted them with powdered sugar as a finishing touch.

Lavender Cookie Ingredients
This homemade lavender cookie recipe requires only six simple ingredients, most of which you probably already have on hand.
- Butter – The butter provides richness, tenderness, and structure to this recipe. You can use either salted or unsalted, depending on your preference.
- Powdered sugar – Also called confectioners’ sugar, this adds sweetness and absorbs the moisture from some of the other ingredients, resulting in a nice base that holds everything together. It also plays a part in creating the delicate end result once baked.
- Vanilla extract – Adding vanilla extract helps enhance the richness of the recipe.
- Flour – All-purpose flour is what brings the lavender cookies into their fullness, and makes them hold their shape.
- Lavender buds – You can use fresh or dried lavender flower buds for this cookie recipe, either will work. Since they tend to shrink during the drying process, there will be more buds in the same unit of measure than if you used fresh. So, to get the same intensity, you’ll need to add slightly more fresh buds than dried.
- Natural lavender flavor (optional) – The flowers have a strong taste and texture, so you have to be careful that you don’t add too many. This natural flavor enhances the floral notes and aroma, without being too overpowering. It is important to use it very sparingly though.
Tools & Equipment Needed
If you love baking, then you’ll definitely already have everything you need on hand. Take a few minutes to gather all of your tools and equipment ahead of time, here’s what you’ll need.
- Stand mixer (or you can use a hand mixer)
- Spatula scraper
- Rolling pin
- Plastic wrap
- Measuring cups & spoons
- Cooling rack
- 2″ round cookie cutter or small canning ring
- Cookie duster or fine colander
Tips For Making Lavender Cookies
Here are a few baking tips and hacks that will help you have the best possible lavender cookies.
- Add the buds at the end of mixing – Make sure to add the lavender flowers after mixing all the other cookie ingredients together. This will help preserve the integrity of the buds for a better visual appearance.
- Shape prior to chilling the dough – Roll out the dough before putting it into the fridge to set. Doing this makes it easier to cut the dough, and helps to create nice, clean cut edges.
- Less is more – When you make this cookie recipe, err on using less lavender buds at first. It is a unique flavor, and adding too much can overpower the delicate blend, or even alter the texture.
- Make the dough in advance – You can store it bundled tight in plastic wrap for about 5-7 days in the refrigerator, or you can freeze it for up to a month.
- Let the dough soften up at room temperature – When you get ready to use your dough, allow it to warm back up to room temperature so that it does not crack when you cut it.
- Have fun – Try experimenting with various shapes, sizes, and decorations. You could add a glaze or frosting on top instead of powdered sugar. Or press sugar crystals or extra lavender buds on top while they’re still warm if you really want to get fancy.
If you love lavender, you will adore this yummy cookie recipe. It has the best flavor and texture, and will melt in your mouth. Just be careful, because they’re delectable and addicting, so you might want to eat them all.

Recipe & Instructions
Lavender Cookie Recipe
These rich, homemade lavender cookies have a subtle sweetness, and the perfect touch of floral notes. With only 6 ingredients and a few steps, it’s simple to whip up a batch whenever you want.
Ingredients
- 10 tablespoons butter, room temperature
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ¼ - ½ tablespoon dried or fresh lavender flower buds
- 2-4 tablespoon powdered sugar for dusting
- ¼ teaspoon natural lavender flavor (optional)
Instructions
- Cream the butter - Add the butter, vanilla, and optional flavoring to a stand mixer. Beat for 1-2 minutes on low-medium speed until creamed.
- Add sugar - Gradually add the powdered sugar to the mixer while running it on low to medium speed, and beat for another 1-2 minutes. Use your spatula to scrape down the sides as necessary to push the batter back to the center.
- Add flour - Add the flour to the mixing bowl slowly while it is beating on low, then run it for another 2-3 minutes.
- Add lavender - Add your dried or fresh lavender buds into the cookie batter while it is mixing on low. Then run it just enough to stir it in, but avoid over beating it.
- Roll out and chill the dough - Form the dough into a ball with your hands, then use the rolling pin to flatten it out into a ½” thick round saucer. Cover it completely in plastic wrap, and place into the refrigerator for 1 hour to chill.
- Preheat oven - Preheat your oven to 350°F.
- Cut out the shapes - Pick your cookie cutter of choice. Or you can use a small round canning ring like I did, which will create about seven 2” round cookies.
- Bake them - Place the cutouts on a cookie sheet and bake for 14-15 minutes until the edges are slightly toasted.
- Cool and dust - Remove them from the oven and place them on a wire cooling rack for 10 minutes. Once cooled, use a cookie duster to lightly sprinkle them with powdered sugar, and enjoy.
Notes
- This lavender cookie is meant to crumble easily, but if it is completely falling apart you have a problem. This can be caused by over mixing or not using the correct fat source (butter). You can correct this by adding an extra teaspoon or two of water to the batter the next time you make it.
- If you're making this recipe for the first time, use ¼ tablespoon of flower buds to see how you like the taste. Then, if you want more of the flavor next time, use up to ½ tablespoon.

Can you use lavender leaves, dried?
Amy Andrychowicz says
I would not recommend using lavender leaves in this cookie recipe because they taste very different than the flower buds do.
