I remember when I first started gardening, nature was seriously my least favorite thing about it.
I especially hated ALL of the bugs, with their annoying buzzing and creepy crawling. Even the good ones totally freaked me out!
It sounds crazy to me now, but back then I thought I had to control every aspect of nature and have a perfectly clean garden with no weeds or critters at all.
But after years of trying to fight against it, I finally figured out that nature isn’t the enemy.
And once I started to embrace nature and work with it instead of against it, it completely changed the way I garden.

Nature Isn’t The Enemy
Ok, it’s time for a little tough love here… Weeds, bugs, and other critters are a part of gardening, for better or worse.
And trying to control or fight against every aspect of nature is not only stressful and exhausting, it’s ultimately impossible.
Because as the saying goes… Nature will always prevail.
But that’s actually GOOD news for you and your garden, and you can use it to your advantage!
Working with nature is pivotal to everything I do and teach, which is why I made it one of my 3 Pillars of a Healthy Garden.

What “Working With Nature” Really Means
You might hear the term “work with nature” and think it means letting your garden grow wild and do whatever it wants.
But that’s not at all what I’m saying. You still need to water, weed, prune, fertilize, and watch for problems.
The difference is that you’re doing those things in a way that works with nature instead of fighting against it.
In other words, instead of trying to control every little thing in your garden, you:
- Work with the natural conditions of the space (i.e.: the existing soil, sunlight, moisture, etc).
- Avoid killing every bug or removing every critter simply because it’s there.
- Invite nature into your garden to do some of the work for you.
- Protect the beneficial organisms that keep pest populations in check.
- Stop reaching for the spray bottle every time an issue pops up.
- Step in only when something is truly causing a problem.

Let Nature Help You
As it turns out, Mother Nature is pretty good at taking care of herself.
Just look around in the natural world. Nobody is out there watering the wildflowers, spraying every bug, or pulling every weed.
Yet the plants survive just fine all on their own. Well guess what, your garden is no different.
When you embrace nature’s role instead of constantly trying to control everything yourself, you’ll find that many problems begin taking care of themselves.
Mother Nature has an amazing ability to restore balance when something gets out of sync, just like she does… well, in nature!
