It’s so funny when people assume that just because I love gardening, it also means I must love doing yard work too – right? Wrong! It’s true, I really do love gardening – but I don’t exactly love all of the chores that come along with it. Trimming the lawn and yard cleanup are a few of my least favorite chores, and it’s important for me to have good tools to help make those not-so-fun tasks much easier. That’s where power tools come in, and good power equipment makes all the difference.
I’m a huge fan of Troy-Bilt and their quality of products, and I’ve written about a few of their yard and garden tools in the past. So when they reached out to me and asked me to test some of their newest products, I said heck yes! And the best part is that I get to tell you all about my experience!
Introducing Troy-Bilt Powered By CORE
CORE is Troy–Bilt’s new line of cordless power equipment, and it’s very exciting! It’s not just like any other battery powered yard equipment, it’s a unique new technology. What makes CORE unique is that the power comes from the motor, not the battery. And more power means longer runtimes, making jobs go quicker than before. Sounds pretty cool, right?
These tools are battery operated, but the true power comes from their new state-of-the-art motor design. I’m not a super techy person when it comes to power equipment, so I’m not going to attempt to explain exactly what that means. You can learn the technical details about it in this video, or read all about it in this article. The bottom line is that, since the power comes from the motor these tools are much more powerful, and the battery will last longer than other battery operated power tools.
Right now, the CORE line includes a string trimmer, leaf blower and hedge trimmer. You can buy these products with or without the battery, which will save you some money if you get more than one CORE product. The battery is interchangeable, so you can save some money by just buying one battery and the bare tools.
The battery and the charging unit are quite large, but the charger can easily be hung on the wall so it won’t take up any counter space. The battery is really nice and has an indicator on it so you can see how much charge there is left on it.
Troy-Bilt Powered By CORE Hedge Trimmer
I was the most excited to try out the CORE cordless hedge trimmer. Until now, I’ve only had an electric trimmer that I have to plug into the wall, and using that thing is a chore in itself. We don’t have a lot of outlets on the outside of our house, so it’s not very practical. Finding extension cords long enough so I can use it all around my yard has always been a major pain. Not to mention the risk of accidentally cutting the cord (which I have never done BTW, ha!). So, to say that I’m happy to have a cordless hedge trimmer now is an understatement. I’m so thrilled I won’t have to worry about messing with all those cords anymore!
I use my hedge trimmer all the time to help make fall and spring garden cleanup much easier, so this cordless hedge trimmer is quickly becoming one of my favorite new garden tools. It’s so nice to just be able to grab it and go. No messing with oil and gas, no labor intensive pull-starting required, and no messing with cords. All it takes is a simple press of a button and I’m off to the garden!
This hedge trimmer is very heavy-duty and the blades are super sharp! It’s got plenty of power to cut through all of the stems and branches, and it makes very quick work of cleaning up the garden! I can’t tell you how long the battery lasts on it because I have yet to run it down. Oh, and did I mention that there are NO CORDS!?! Yippie!
Troy-Bilt Powered By CORE String Trimmer
The CORE powered string trimmer has a ton more power than the cordless trimmer that I used to use. I was surprised by the amount of power this trimmer has. It feels like you’re using a gas trimmer rather than a battery powered one, it really does have a lot of kick. It’s well balanced and pretty easy to use too, but doesn’t come with a shoulder strap like my gas powered trimmer has (though there is a clip so you can attach a strap). It’s definitely much lighter than our gas powered trimmer, but still heavier than my old electric trimmer was. It would be nice to have a strap to make it easier to handle when trimming our entire yard.
Even though it has a lot of power, the trimmer also has a boost button just in case you need even more power. I’ve never had to use the power boost just for trimming our yard. But I did end up trying out the boost button at the community garden (where the weeds are serious business!), and it definitely gave it a nice boost of power to cut through the tougher weeds.
The trimmer has a nice long battery life, so we can easily trim our entire yard and still have plenty of battery power left to take it up to the community garden and trim there too. This is huge for me, because our old battery powered trimmer would have to be recharged half way through trimming around the yard and all of my gardens. (That was a huge pain!)
One thing I did notice about this trimmer is that the safety guard around the head isn’t very wide, and there was a lot more flying debris than I’m used to. It wasn’t too problematic, but wearing safety glasses and pants is definitely a must when using this trimmer.
I am very impressed with the CORE products that I tested out in my yard and gardens, and am very excited about this new line of cordless power equipment by Troy-Bilt.
