Product Review and Giveaway: Troy-Bilt Neighborhood Riding Mower – CLOSED

It’s summer, my favorite time of year. During the summer, I want to spend as much time outside as possible. But, I want to spend that time in the garden, not doing other chores like mowing the lawn. Well, this summer mowing the lawn just got easier thanks to my awesome new riding mower from Troy-Bilt.

Troy-Bilt Neighborhood Riding Mower

One of the perks of being a member of the Troy-Bilt Saturday6 is that I get to test out their products, and I even get to keep a couple (and I get to give you one too!). Troy-Bilt gave me the TB30 R Neighborhood Rider to review (and keep), and I get to tell you all about it.

I’ve never owned or even driven a riding lawn mower before joining the Saturday6 team. I’ve always used a walk behind mower to cut the grass, and it’s always been a chore. It takes me over an hour to mow the lawn with our walk behind mower. Now that I have the Neighborhood Rider, my mowing time has been cut in half.

Troy-Bilt Neighborhood Rider

I’ve always wanted a riding mower, but haven’t gotten one because our yard is pretty small. Plus, we put up a fence a few years ago and the gates were a concern. We borrowed our neighbor’s riding mower once, and it barely fit through our gate. We actually nicked the gate a few times trying to fit through (Doh!).

But this mower was specifically designed for people like me who have small yards and gates to fit through. It’s only 30″ wide, so it easily fits through the gate.

30″ mower easily fits through my gate

As you can see, I have grass paths between all of my gardens. I was worried that a riding mower wouldn’t fit through the narrow paths in the garden. I was prepared to have to get out the walk behind mower to cut those areas.

Mowing between the gardens

I was pleasantly surprised that the Neighborhood Rider not only fit, but it’s easy to maneuver in those tight spaces.

Easy to maneuver in tight spaces

One of my biggest pet peeves about our walk behind mower is the lawn boogers it leaves behind. These big clumps of grass all over the lawn annoy me so much, that I take extra time going over the spots I just got done mowing in order to get rid of the boogers. I’m happy to report that the Neighborhood mower doesn’t leave behind any lawn boogers. It does a beautiful job of cutting and mulching the grass.

No annoying lawn boogers

Not only has this mower made a huge difference in mowing time, it’s been a great asset in the garden too. One of the things that was important to me was that my riding lawn mower have a trailer hookup on the back. I’m always hauling dirt and rock and other heavy things from the driveway to the backyard. Although pushing the wheelbarrow is great exercise, it gets to be too much when you have a yard of dirt or several hundred pounds of rock to haul.

Trailer hookup

The Neighborhood Rider has a hitch for hooking up an optional trailer attachment1. It sounds funny, but this was the final selling point for me. I love the optional trailer attachment. It makes hauling stuff easy, and saves me from exhaustion, aches and pains.

Love the optional trailer attachment!

The Neighborhood Rider will save me countless hours in the yard and garden, and it’s fun to drive too. I can’t say enough about this mower, I really love it. I’m starting to wonder how I ever lived without it.

Me mowing with the Neighborhood Rider

One thing that takes some time to get used to is that it’s a little jerky when you first start moving. I’m getting better with practice though.

Oh, and I was disappointed when I discovered that there’s no horn. It looks like there’s a horn, but it’s not. Ha!

No, that’s not a horn

I’ve had a few of my friends and neighbors test drive it, and here’s what they’re saying…

“Great turning radius.”
“Fun to drive.”
“It’s like driving a go-kart.”
“Easy to drive and steer.”
“I want one!”
“Oh look, it has a cup holder!”

That reminds me… I forgot to mention the cup holder. It’s not just for looks either, I’ve mowed the entire lawn with my water bottle in the cup holder on several occasions, and it’s never fallen out. Nice touch!

Cup holder on the Neighborhood Rider

Do you like what you see? Well, I’m ready to hand you they keys! One lucky winner will get a shiny new Neighborhood Rider of their own!

We live on 3 3/4 acres – over 1/2 of which is pasture for the horse & donkey. The rest of it is "our space". Hubby bought a huge Husqvarna riding mower and proceeded to mow down EVERYTHING I planted (we just moved here in March). Some of the trees were 2 yo cuttings I'd brought with me from our previous home. The other plants he killed were a Clematis I'd rescued at Wal-Mart

I have an old gas powered mower that is a hand me down. I really don't know how long it takes to mow because now that my son moved out and I have to mow I can never do it in one shot. I would guess the front yard takes about two hours and I decided not to mow the back because it is just too hot and too many mosquitos.

Hard to start, leaves clumps of grass if using the bagger or not – although it says it's a mulcher. Tires have no tread left at all and just spin over anything resembling wet or even damp grass. . I cut the lawn with a toro push mower, 4/10's of an acre. Sweaty job but I have to do it. I also have a fence but that baby would certainly fit through the gate! I would love to win this! It would be great! I will make a spot for it

I currently use a push lawn mower, and it takes me about an hour and a half to do my lawn. My neighbors laugh at me because my lawn mower isn't self propelled – apparently mine is so old, that the newer ones aren't as hard to push? hmmm. I've looked at riding lawn mowers, but haven't been able to justify one to myself yet –

I have a riding mower, but it's beginning to wear out and I have an acre to mow. Even with the riding mower it takes me 3-4 hours to mow it all. This would be great for a second mower so my hubby and I could mow together and get it done faster and then when this mower goes (which could be anytime) we'd have another riding mower to continue on. I'd never get it done with a push mower.

It takes me 2 hours to push mow around the house & another hour around the barn area. Every year my husband suggests I get a riding mower & I poo-poo the idea, because I need the exercise & love being outdoors. I have to admit though, when it is 98 degrees & humid out, I secretly wish for the riding mower.

I don't mow, because we don't own a mower. I do pay for someone to come and mow our small yard for us, but this little tractor would help us mow! And yay! it would fit through our gate!

I am using a Honda walk-behind mower since my old riding mower died and I haven't been able to replace it. I have a over an acre of grass (not really lawn but it still needs to be mowed so it takes days to get it all done and then it's time to start over again.

Currently use a Troy-Bilt 20" walk behind and it takes me about 2½ hours to mow and an additional hour to edge due to all the flower beds. My wife has recently developed a medical situation that doesn't allow me more than 30 minutes free time before having to check on her, unless she's out in the yard in herr wheelchair watching me, so winning this would speed up the yard process and

Found your site while looking for reviews on this lawnmower! I love the site and am curious about the mower.
I am a single mother buying my first house as such, with an acre to mow. My daughter wanted a yard and who am I to deny her? I just don’t know what is the best purchase for mowing the lawn. The house comes with a pool, something else to learn about, to mow around. How do you think this mower would do around a pool and deck?

I love this mower, it has really sped up the time it takes to mow our lawn. It maneuvers very easily around all of my garden beds, so I think it would work just as well around your pool and deck.
